Please note that you must take a back up of your SD / Memory CARD before installing any updates on your device. If you want install tomtom mobile 5 to tomtom mobile 6, make sure you don’t over write on other file. If you just copy them without over write then it is safe to do so and you will lose nothing if the update did not work. In my mind if you put some tomtom mobile 5 voices to tomtom mobile 6, then it should work without any problem. The following are some links which will help you to some free voices for your tomtom.

When you download & unzip a Tomtom voice you will receive 2 or 3 files, they have the extensions; .chk, .vif and optionally, .bmp the image file. e.g. if you download the voice of Andy Siddell. you will receive ‘data83.chk’, ‘data83.vif’ and ‘data83.bmp’

How to install tomtom voices on all tomtom devices
 

Download & unzip the voice which you wish to install.

Connect your Tomtom via the USB cable. Or insert the Tomtom card into you card reader if you have one.

Open My computer & open the Tomtom  directory

Locate a folder named 'voices'. As shown in the picture below.

Copy voice files from the downloaded file (e.g. ‘data83.chk’, ‘data83.vif’, ‘data83.bmp’) & paste into the 'voices' folder circled below. (To copy right click & select copy. To paste right click & select paste)

Turn off your TomTom and disconnect, or re-insert the card into the Tomtom.

Switch on your tomtom and check for the new voice. Tap screen - change preferences - change voice and thats all you have done now.

 

 

Only computer voices are able to read street names, messages etc. aloud. Make sure that you have selected a computer voice.
To select a voice, tap Change voice in the Preferences menu.



To set what the computer voice reads aloud, tap Speech preferences in the Preferences menu.

Question

My GO 910 has stopped reading street names, messages and traffic reports to me. Why?

Answer

Only computer voices are able to read street names, messages etc. aloud. Make sure that you have selected a computer voice.

To select a voice, tap Change voice in the Preferences menu.

Question

When using a US English voice, the distances shown on my TomTom device and the distances used by the voice are different. How can I change this?

Answer

If you select the US English voice "Mandy", she does not express distances in yards or metres, but says, for example, "one quarter mile". But your TomTom device will still show distances in yards or metres, depending on the setting you have chosen.

All other US English voices express distances in yards or metres. To make sure that the voice and your TomTom device use distances in the same way, select another voice.

To change the voice, tap Change voice in the Preferences menu and select the voice you want to use.
